Social Ills: Illegal Street Racing..."Rempit"

Illegal Street Racing may be a "quick rush" but it is illegal and deadly. A few seconds of fun may lead to serious injury or death to you, your passengers, or an innocent bystander. It may also lead to criminal prosecution, jail time, and hefty fines. This is just for street racing. If someone crashes, and someone is injured or killed, you could be arrested. In addition, many agencies and municipalities are enacting law to make simply being at a street race a convictable offense. Many are also seizing and crushing vehicles impounded at street races. What does this mean? This means that if you are at a street race, driving or not, you can be arrested and your vehicle impounded, seized, and crushed. If your vehicle is financed, you are still responsible for the payments, regardless of whether your vehicle was seized or not. This means you make payments on a crushed car!

Vandalism

Vandalism is not a new phenomenon affecting Malaysia. It has been one of the outcomes of the current social problems affecting younger generations in Malaysia today. Although the issue and the basic understanding of vandalism is known to every Malaysian, it has not motivated public, government, professionals or academicians to produce further research and studies regarding this issue in the urban open space environment.

The results of vandalism in Malaysia or in other countries can be seen in a variety of locations: at bus stops; on signage and billboards; on walls at selected buildings in neighbourhood areas; and also on public facilities in parks and urban open space areas. Vandalism and graffiti may occur in the most unthinkable places, on signage, building walls, bus stands,on plants and more. Absence of graffiti, damage and litter may indicate a cared-for environment, and a cared-for environment may suggest that it is safe for the community to use.

Gangsterism...

Gangsterism is common in a developing nation such as Malaysia and we have heard a lot about it occurring in schools. It has been reported that in developed countries, schoolchildren are increasingly involved in gangs.

To curb this social ill, parents, educators and society at large should be aware of what is going on among our youths. Though there are various psychological and physical factors that cause a person to choose to become a gang member, here are some basic suggestions for parents/guardians to help nurture their children with love and respect.Gangsters are a threat to society and you can be considered a gangster if you are involved in any of these activities:

-Extort money from shop owners, hawkers and the like.
-Receive payment for threatening others or to beat someone up.
-Protect/cover-up gambling, prostitution, and drug trafficking syndicates.
-Ransom people for money.
-Be a part of organised crime.
-Force anyone to join a gang and its illegal activities

What is bullying??

Bullying is when someone keeps doing or saying things to have power over another person. Some of the ways they bully other people are by: calling them names, saying or writing nasty things about them, leaving them out of activities, not talking to them, threatening them, making them feel uncomfortable or scared, taking or damaging their things, hitting or kicking them, or making them do things they don't want to do.

Have any of these things happened to you? Have you done any of these things to someone else? Really, bullying is wrong behaviour which makes the person being bullied feel afraid or uncomfortable

Why do some people bully?

There are a lot of reasons why some people bully.

They may see it as a way of being popular, or making themselves look tough and in charge. Some bullies do it to get attention or things, or to make other people afraid of them. Others might be jealous of the person they are bullying. They may be being bullied themselves.Some bullies may not even understand how wrong their behaviour is and how it makes the person being bullied feel.

Talk to them softly and tell them what is the good and bad behaviors so they can think positively and being

They borrow. From family, friends, colleagues, even strangers, often hiding the reason why they need the money. Then, they start gambling again to "make up" their losses.

Reported HIV infections have close relations with individual behaviors and lifestyle. It has been confirmed that the two major ways of infections are through sexual relations and sharing of drug injection needles. Social illness problems arising from moral decadence among youth that could lead to the spread of HIV becomes more obvious and worrying. A research on the youth loitering (“lepak”) behaviors that has been conducted in 1994 reveals that 18% out of 6,110 youth respondents has had the experience of having free sex, 14% has had drug abuse experience. A research on youth and AIDS that has been conducted in 1996 on 4,347 general youth with ages between 13 – 25 revealed that 6% has had free sex, 5% had been involved in drug addiction and 31% in smoking. Troubled youth

Youth or adolescence are crucial stages in human development. In our society, most adolescents grow up in a healthy environment, integrate well into society and are able to have their needs met. The majority obtain the resources they require for their health, safety, well-being and development from their parents, families and communities.

However, a minority of youth or adolescents are unfortunately living in great distress. Their problems are sometimes severe enough to impede their development as well as their ability to find a place in society. These difficulties may take on several forms:

A neglected child who does not receive vital healthcare;
Another who is left unattended for long periods of time (considering the child’s age);
A young victim of sexual abuse;
A mistreated child;
A teenager with behavioural problems or a drug problem;
A suicidal youth.
The list is long, and behind every case are a young person and family in distress

Introduction

Our teenager are the most important assets for our nation because they will become leaders and lead Malaysia to achieve vision 2020. The social problems that we are facing nowadays are always blamed on our youth as they are individuals who are involved in narcotics, cigarettes, alcohol or sex and pregnancy before marriage. More than that, our youth is preferred to do "something-new" without knowing their behaviour either positive or negative effects.

However, it is not the best way to solve the social problems if we keep blaming our youth. Parents, community members or government could seek and work together to implement the new path to reduce or to eliminate the factors which contribute to increasing social problems among our youth in Malaysia

From the mid in year 1990s, various music subcultures such as rap, hip-hop, heavy metal and punk have taken the centre stage of personifying the rhetoric concerning social problems among the youths. Among those, Black Metal, a sub genre of heavy metal, is the latest of these subcultures that has gradually captured the interest of Malaysian youths and subjected to the scrutiny of the local media. The question now is whether this subculture had created a moral panic in Malaysia as the local media began to give unwarranted publicity about the Black Metal subculture. Therefore, it also will look at the effects of Black Metal subculture among today's youths and the role of media in it. The issue is to find out if this culture had caused a moral panic in Malaysia by analysing the effects of this culture and the role of media.Above are the list of social problems involved by our youths:
